Robert Mims the Texan bull rider - a short documentary
“In this new film, three-times senior world champion bull rider (an activity that needs no further description) Robert Mims introduces British filmmaker Doug Hancock to the close-knit world of a traditional rodeo community. This lyrical portrait of the rituals and rhythms that underpin the cowboy way of life was shot on location amid the dry heat and picturesque landscapes of Texas, New Mexico and Utah, setting the scene for an exhilarating picture of a traditional sport that, in 2018, is still finding ways to keep up with the times.”
Marley Hansen - Nowness
What first struck my friend Chris and I was Robert’s generosity to and acceptance of two rodeo newbies, who as complete strangers, had asked to be on the road with him for two whole weeks.
Robert introduced us to his rodeo friends who equally accepted the quirks of two overgrown ‘green horns’. After some time shared and after a bit of wild play and jinks in a veteran’s bar, one of Robert’s friends snatched the crutches from an injured fellow rider, anointed and knighted us as honorary Americans albeit for one day, July 4th.
Robert Mims the Texan bull rider was a very rewarding experience. Not for the festival gongs and accolades but for the genuine friendship and hospitality we were given. Thank you my friends.
